Xiaohelihe Gr

Xiaohelihe Gr

Period:
Permian, Carboniferous

Age Interval:
C2-P2 (17), uncertain Carboniferous to Middle Permian

Province:
Heilongjiang

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located in the Xiaohelihe area of Heihe City, Heilongjiang Province. It was named by the Xiaoxinganling (Lesser Khingan-Mts.) Regional Geological Survey Party in 1957, and was cited officially by Yin Zanxun et al. (1966).

Synonym: Xiaohelihe Fm

Lithology and Thickness

Sandstone and Volcanics. Composed of grey-yellow and yellow-brown sandstones, intercalated with volcanic conglomerate, rhyolite, andesitic porphyrite, massive acidic lava and grey-black slate, with its top part consisting of tuffaceous shale that yields plant fossils (phytolites), with a thickness of over 1320 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Volcanics

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Uncertain contact relationship with the underlying strata; but regionally is cited as having a conformable contact on the Dahelihe Fm (upper Devonian)

Upper contact

Disconformable contact with the overlying Bazhan Fm; or elsewhere with the Huadaqi Fm

Regional extent

Distributed in the Handaqi area of Heihe City, the Guanniaohe and Sankuanggou areas of the Nenjiang County, Heilongjiang Province, with its scattered exposures resulting in a good many of incomplete sections.

GeoJSON

null

Fossils

Yields Plant fossils (phytolites) such as Calamites, Noeggerathiopsis, etc.

Age

Uncertain; but seems currently assigned to late Carboniferous and/or Middle Permian according to the C2-P2 designation in the lexicon entry; and that the overlying Bazhan is assigned as late Permian or early Triassic. Plus, it is cited as being conformable on upper Devonian Dahelihe Fm => vague basal-Carboniferous through earliest Permian interval with uncertain continuity?

Age Span:

Depositional setting

It is interpreted as a continental-paralic facies.

Additional Information

Confusingly, a Xiaohelihe Fm is cited as being conformably overlain by Huadaqi Fm in Heilongjiang (column 13) of ? Carboniferous-late Permian (but shown on Strat diagram as earliest Carboniferous!). Hongfei Hou advised to "change to conformable contacts with the Carboniferous-Permian Xiaohelihe Fm" here, and for the upper Devonian underlying formations.
